What Your Child Will Learn

Week 1: Introduction to the Piano
In this lesson, students will explore the piano and its components, learning about the keyboard's mechanics and the history behind its creation. They will become familiar with proper posture, hand positioning, and finger numbers, which are essential for technique. We’ll also begin practicing the five-note scale to build dexterity and hand coordination.

Key Focus: Piano fundamentals, posture, finger numbers, and the five-note scale.

Week 2: Ready to Rock
We’ll warm up with the five-note scale and finger exercises, helping students build dexterity and confidence. In this lesson, students will learn their first song, Ode to Joy, while also getting introduced to basic music theory, including the C Major scale. By the end of the class, they’ll have a strong foundation to continue playing simple songs.

Key Focus: Finger exercises, Ode to Joy, C Major scale introduction.

Week 3: Reading Notes
Our warm-up will include the C Major scale, after which students will focus on learning to read and write notes on the staff. We will use fun tricks to help students memorize note names and practice identifying them on the keyboard. To make the lesson interactive, each student will create their own labeled music staff as an art project to take home, reinforcing what they’ve learned.

Key Focus: Reading notes on the staff, creating a note diagram art project.

Week 4: Reading Rhythms
Students will continue their C Major scale practice with the added challenge of incorporating arpeggios into the warm-up. This lesson’s focus will be on understanding note values (whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes) and learning how to count rhythms. Students will also have the chance to create their own rhythm patterns for the class to practice together.

Key Focus: Note values, rhythm reading and counting, creating rhythm patterns.

Week 5: Reading Bass Clef and Left Hand
In this lesson, students will shift their focus to the left hand by learning to read notes in the bass clef. We’ll begin with simple left-hand exercises, combining them with familiar right-hand melodies to promote coordination between both hands. This lesson helps students become comfortable with reading and playing in the bass clef.

Key Focus: Reading bass clef, left-hand practice, two-handed coordination.

Week 6: Exploring Dynamics and Expression
In this session, students will learn how to incorporate dynamics (loud and soft sounds) and expression into their playing. After warming up with scales and arpeggios, they’ll practice applying dynamics to their music, making their performances more expressive. We’ll focus on markings like forte (loud), piano (soft), and crescendos.

Key Focus: Dynamics, musical expression, applying dynamics to songs.

Week 7: Chords and Accompaniment

In this lesson, students will explore the basics of improvisation, using the C Major scale to create their own melodies. This encourages creativity and helps them gain confidence in playing freely without sheet music. We’ll start by reviewing familiar scales and finger exercises, then guide students through simple improvisation techniques, such as call-and-response and creating variations on a melody. By the end of the lesson, each student will have had the opportunity to play their own short improvisation.
Key Focus: Improvisation techniques, creative expression, building confidence without sheet music.

Week 8: Games & Review

This week’s lesson will be all about teamwork and learning through play. Students will participate in musical games and group exercises to reinforce their knowledge of rhythm, notes, and musical terms. Activities like rhythmic clapping games, name-that-note challenges, and “musical memory” will strengthen their understanding of key concepts in a fun and interactive way. Group activities will also help develop their ability to collaborate musically with others.
Key Focus: Reinforcing music theory through games, group collaboration, and teamwork.

Week 9: Performance
In our final lesson, students will review everything they’ve learned over the past 8 weeks. After warming up with scales and arpeggios, they will each prepare a song to perform for the class, incorporating all the skills they’ve developed—reading music, rhythm, dynamics, and coordination. This performance helps boost their confidence and reinforces the progress they’ve made.

Key Focus: Review of all skills, student performances, boosting confidence.
